In the Valley Baseball League last night: Waynesboro nipped Winchester: 9-7; Front Royal outlasted Harrisonburg: 6-5; New Market beat Strasburg: 6-4; Charlottesville shaded Purcellville: 5-4; and, Covington brought out the lumber on Staunton: 10-7.
Tonight – Front Royal is at Purcellville; Winchester travels to Covington; Woodstock hosts Charlottesville; Strasburg heads to Waynesboro; and, Staunton plays at Harrisonburg.
Max Scherzer became the first pitcher in the majors to reach 10 wins this season, as the Nationals beat Tampa Bay last night: 4-2. Scherzer struck out 13 in 8 innings of work including a so-called “immaculate inning” in the 6th. In that frame, Scherzer struck out all 3 Rays batters with just 9 pitches. Matt Adams homered for Washington and Sean Doolittle pitched the 9th for his 15th save of the year. The Nats and Rays play again today in DC. First pitch is 1:05 on our sister station, Sports Radio 1450.
The Orioles broke a 7-game losing streak and beat the punchless Mets last night 2-1 at Citi Field in New York. Alex Cobb threw 6 strong innings for the Birds who also got 2 hits from Trey Mancini. The O’s and Mets play today at 1:10.
