SALEM, Va. – Host Roanoke College used a strong second quarter to fuel a 75-51 ODAC women’s basketball victory over Shenandoah Saturday at the Cregger Center.

The Maroons (10-13, 5-9 ODAC) extended their three-point first quarter lead with a 25-point second quarter on their way to a third straight win in the young series between the two schools.

Shenandoah (4-19, 1-13) trailed by just three, 13-10, after one but saw the Maroons score seven additional points than the Hornets in the second before extending their lead by another five points in the third.

RC kept up the pressure in the fourth, outscoring SU 23-14 to coast home to the 24-point win.

Freshman Jordan Sondrol had a team-high 12 points off the bench for coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft while Erin French just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Roanoke shot 48 percent to the Hornets 31 percent and had a 42-36 advantage on the glass.

Shenandoah did outscore RC on second chance points, 15-8, but 19 turnovers led to 25 Maroons points.

The Hornets continue this final road trip of the regular season on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Hollins.

SU was a 51-43 winner over HU on January 7 in the first meeting of the season between the two schools.
