Route 624 Closing for Bridge Work

27 September 2019 Front Royal/Warren County News

September 27, 2019

WARREN COUNTY – The Virginia Department of Transportation announced that part of Route 624 in Warren County will close from early October to the Spring of 2020.

The section of Morgan Ford Rd. between Routes 643 and 661 will be closed beginning Oct. 8. Homeowners on either side of the bridge will still have access to their properties. Traffic will follow one of two detours.

Drivers south of the bridge will turn right on Howellsville Rd and continue onto Route 603 and eventually Route 638 in Clarke County. Then drivers will turn left on John Mosby Highway and finally left on Route 624 to complete the detour in that direction.

Drivers north of the bridge will instead follow Milldale Rd. and Red Gate Rd. north and turn right on John Mosby Highway. Eventually the detour takes a right onto Route 638 which becomes Route 603 and finally Route 643 at the end of the detour.

Contractors are scheduled to make major improvements to the Morgan Ford bridge over the Shenandoah River. The southern approach to the bridge has been damaged overtime by high water since the completion of the bridge last year. Contractors will use metal sheet pilings and large stone to stabilize and strengthen the roadway and roadbed according to a press release from VDOT. The project is intended to minimize damage from future high water events.

The fixed completion date of the project is June 5, 2020. There is an early completion incentive if the work is finished by Dec. 6 of this year. All work is weather permitting.
