School systems across the region discuss Gov. Youngkin’s mask mandate

A social post from Shenandoah Public Schools announced a specially called meeting for 9 a.m. today regarding the new mask mandate from Governor Youngkin.

On Sat. Jan. 15 one of the 11 executive orders signed by new Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin was to allow parents decide if their child should wear a mask in schools.

Several school systems across our region announced special meetings to discuss that issue in emails and social post.

Tonight Jan. 19 Warren County school board already had a work session planned for 5 o’clock.

Winchester City school board announced in an email that their special meeting will be 6 p.m. tomorrow Jan. 20.

Frederick County called for a special school board meeting by email as well which will start at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow Jan. 20.

As it stands right now most school systems across the region have announced that they will continue to follow Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

The governor’s mandate doesn’t go into affect until Mon. Jan. 24.

We will have an update on the local school system’s directive as soon as the information is available.
