Following the second closed session of the Shenandoah County School Board meeting, members voted 6 to none to appeal a federal court’s order.
The order from Judge Michael F. Urbanski ruled that the use of confederate school names violated multiple civil rights.
The judge called for the names to be changed immediately according to the Virginia Mercury report.
The school board voted to defend what it views as its lawful local authority over school naming.
The board challenges what it considers legal, procedural, and factual errors in the ruling.
One of the challenges by the school board is the alleged legal error in finding the board liable without finding racial intent.
Board members argue that the appeal is the proper legal remedy to protect taxpayers from a costly settlement and name change.
