The Shenandoah National Park (SNP) reports finding the remains of a person believed to be a missing Fairfax man.

The search for Mateo Cobo Zevallos in the SNP has been suspended after remains were found around 12:15 p.m. May 21.

The remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Manassas for positive identification with the cause of death to be determined.

Preliminary identification indicates the remains are those of Zevallos who was reported missing on May 6.

Zevallos was last seen on May 5 as he was leaving his Oakton home on his way to George Mason University.

SNP Rangers, Virginia Department of Emergency Management and Search and Rescue teams launched the search after Zevallos’ car was found in the Overall Run Falls Trail parking area.

Trails were closed around Overall Run for search operations.

The remains were found just over a mile and a half away from where the car was parked.

The remains were found in a steep area that features several rock outcroppings.

All operations are back to a normal schedule in the SNP/Skyline Drive with all trails now back open.
