SU Baseball Wins, deGrom Outduels Scherzer, Caps Win, UVA Advances
On the Shenandoah University sports scene, baseball improved to 10-5 overall with a 9-7 win over Franklin & Marshall. The Hornets jumped on the Diplomats with a 5-run first inning, highlighted by a Grant Thompson 2-run homer. SU returns to action tomorrow with a noon twinbill at Randolph Macon.
Shepherd visits men’s tennis this afternoon at 4pm.
The Washington Nationals were blanked by the New York Mets 2-0 on Opening Day. Last year’s Cy Young winner Jacob DeGrom struck out 10 before giving way to his relievers. Max Scherzer was the tough-luck loser for the Nats, allowing only 2 hits and fanning 12. The Nationals return to action tomorrow against the Mets. Air time is 12:35 on SportsRadio 1450.
The Baltimore Orioles dropped their opener at Yankee Stadium yesterday 7-2.
The Virginia Cavaliers have advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament with a hard-fought 53-49 win over Oregon. The Cavs now play Purdue tomorrow night. Virginia Tech plays Duke tonight at around 9:40 in a Sweet Sixteen matchup.
The Washington Capitals clinced an NHL playoff berth last night with a 3-2 win at Carolina. It’s the fifth straight year the Caps have reached the 100-point plateau. Next up for the Capitals, a 7pm face off tomorrow night at Carolina on SportsRadio 1450.
And Virginia Tech was eliminated yesterday from the Women’s NIT by JMU.
