Hornet Men Get Split, Eagles Blank Skins, Caps In Action Today

Chris Chaney’s 35 points helped Shenandoah University men’s basketball to an 83-62 consolation game win Saturday night in the Hornet Holiday Tournament. With the victory, the 4-7 Hornets snapped a 3-game losing streak. In the tournament championship game, the Coast Guard Academy outlasted Eastern in overtime. Next up for the Hornets is a women-men’s doubleheader Saturday at the Wilkins Center. Game times are 2 & 4 respectively.

The Philadelphia Eagles shut out the Washington Redskins yesterday at Fed-Ex Field 24-0. The win, combined with the Vikings loss against the Bears, gave the Eagles an NFC Wild Card berth against Chicago this weekend. Washington gained less than 100 total yards for the first time since 1961 as they finished the season at 7-9.

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens secured an AFC playoff spot by outlasting the Cleveland Browns yesterday 26-24. The Ravens will now entertain the Chargers this coming Sunday in a Wild Card matchup.

The red-hot Washington Capitals take the ice this afternoon, as they entertain the Nashville Predators in a New Year’s Eve matinee. The Caps have won 9 of their last 10, and sit atop the NHL’s Metro Division with 51 points. Air time is 12:15 on NBC SportsRadio 1450.

Among the myriad of bowl games today is the Military Bowl, as Virginia Tech plays Cincinnati in Annapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. Over the weekend, the Virginia Cavaliers blanked South Carolina in the Belk Bowl 28-0.

And, it’ll be number 1 Alabama versus number 2 Clemson a week from tonight in the College Football Playoff Championship game. The Tide outscored Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl 45-34, while the Tigers handled Notre Dame 30-3 in the Cotton Bowl Classic.
