Super Bowl Matchup Set, SU B-Ball Drops 2, Caps Lose Again
The Shenandoah University Hornet men and women’s basketball teams fell in respective games of a Saturday doubleheader at the Wilkins Center. The women lost to Roanoke 65-45, as the Maroons shot 70 percent from the floor in the second half to break the game open. Shannon Kuhn led the Hornets with 14. The SU women, now 8-10 overall and 4-7 in the ODAC, will host Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday night at 7.
Meanwhile, the Hornet men saw Roanoke race to a 45-29 halftime lead on the way to an 85-63 win at Wilkins. After a tight opening 11 minutes of the contest, the Maroons went on runs of 9-1 and 17-0 to take total control of the game. Chris Chaney scored 14 to lead Shenandoah, who will travel to W&L Wednesday night. Air time is 6:45 on the River 95-3.
It’ll be a rematch of Super Bowl 36 in this year’s “Big Game”, as the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams won their conference championship games in overtime yesterday. In the NFC title game, Greg Zeurlein’s 57-yard field goal in OT was the game-winner in a 26-23 Rams win. The game will be remembered for a late no-call on an obvious Rams pass-interference call that would have allowed the Saints to run down the clock and win in regulation.
In the AFC Championship Game, Tom Brady led the Patriots on an overtime touchdown drive for a 37-31 win against the Chiefs. The game went back and forth in the final period, as Brady outdueled Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes. The Patriots will now head to their 3rd consecutive Super Bowl. The game is set for Sunday, February 3rd in Atlanta.
And, the Capitals continued their slide, as they were crushed yesterday 8-5 by Chicago. Washington has now lost 5 in a row and are now out of first place in the NHL’s Metro Division.
