SU Baseball Splits…5 Virginia Teams Go Dancin’…Rory Wins Players
Over the weekend, Shenandoah University Baseball split a pair of Saturday games with ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan. In the opener, the Marlins broke open a tie game with 4 runs in the 7th and 2 runs in the 8th for a 7-2 win. SU returned the favor in the nightcap with a 6-4 win. The 7-3, 3-1 Hornets return to action Wednesday with a 4pm ODAC contest at Bridgewater.
Elsewhere on the SU sports scene Saturday:
Men’s Lacrosse outscored Ferrum 19-6
Women’s Lacrosse fell to Lebanon Valley 14-8
Men & Women’s Tennis lost to Roanoke, 8-1 & 9-0, respectively
and Outdoor Track & Field competed in the W&L Carnival meet with 38 personal records and 10 ODAC qualifiers.
5 Virginia teams are in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, highlighted by UVA’s number-one seed in the South Region. The Cavs will take on Gardner-Webb at 3pm Friday in Columbia, SC.
Virginia Tech earned a number 4 seed in the East and will take on Saint Louis Friday in San Jose, California.
The Liberty Flames are a 12-seed in the East and take on 5th-seed Mississippi State Friday. The winner will play the Virginia Tech-Saint Louis winner in round two.
The VCU Rams are also in the East Region as a number 8 seed, and will
battle 9-seed Central Florida Friday.
And Old Dominion, winners of the C-USA tournament, are a 14-seed in the South, and will play 3rd seed Purdue on Thursday.
Aside from UVA, the other number-one seeds in the NCAA Tournament are Duke, Gonzaga, and North Carolina.
In golf, Rory McIlroy held off a star-studded field yesterday to win the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. 48-year old Jim Furyk finished one-shot back.
And Kyle Busch won his 200th race across the 3 major NASCAR series by taking the checkered flag yesterday at the Auto Club 400 in Phoenix. That 200th win ties the record held by Richard Petty.
