Area HS Football Season Ends, SU Sets Record in Finale, Skins Win
The area high school playoff season came to an end this weekend as the 2 remaining VHSL playoff teams were defeated. Goochland eliminated Skyline 56-22 in a Class 3 Region B semifinal game, while Strasburg fell to Stuart’s Draft 28-14 in the Class 2 region B semis.
In college football, a 35-point second quarter propelled Shenandoah University to a 70-35 win over Methodist Saturday at Shentel Stadium. The 70 point output set a school record, as freshman quarterback Chris Sonnenberg completed 30-of-35 for 367 yards and 5 touchdowns. SU also scored on a blocked punt and an interception return, as they finished their season at 6-4.
Meanwhile, Bridgewater lost to Delaware Valley 30-22 in the first round of the NCAA Division-3 playoffs.
Both Virginia and Virginia Tech were winners over the weekend. The Hokies blanked Pitt 28-0 for their second consecutive shutout, while the Cavaliers routed Liberty 55-27 on Saturday. Virginia & Virginia Tech will renew their rivalry Friday at noon, with the ACC Coastal Division title on the line.
The Washington Redskins broke a 9-game home losing streak yesterday with a 19-16 win over the Lions at Fed-Ex Field. The ‘Skins took advantage of 4 Detroit turnovers, including an interception that led to Dustin Hopkins’ game-winning field goal with 16 seconds remaining.
