Area HS Hoop, Hornets Win Opener, Caps Fined
In local boy’s high school hoop last night, Skyline ran past George Mason 67-48. Page defeated Clarke 66-46, Handley routed Faquier 73-38, and Madison nipped Rappahannock 42-40.
In girls basketball, Madison beat Rppahannock 46-38, while Page downed Clarke 50-31
The Shenandoah Hornets erased a 3-point halftime deficit and held on to beat Mary Baldwin in men’s basketball 75-72 at the Wilkins Center last night. The Hornets used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to get the exhibition win. Zach Garrett had 20 points for SU, who officially open the season Saturday at 3 against Bridgewater. No fans will be allowed at the Wilkins Center, but you can hear the action on The River 95-3.
The Hornet women play tonight at Wilkins when they take on Roanoke at 6.
The Washington Capitals have been fined $100k by the NHL for violating coronavirus protocols. The violations include a gathering in a hotel room. In addition, Alex Ovechkin and three others on the team were put on the COVID-19 list. The Caps are scheduled to be back in action Friday night at home against the Buffalo Sabres. And, the Washington Wizards’ planed return on Friday has been pushed back until Sunday to give the team time to get game-ready. The Wizards have not played in over a week due to coronavirus issues.
