VBL Update, Nats Take 2 From Phils, USA Women Back In Action Today
In the Valley Baseball League last night:
Winchester beat Charlottesville 8-5
Harrisonburg defeated Purcellville 9-6
Strasburg at Staunton and New Market at Covington were postponed
and have been rescheduled.
Tonight in the VBL:
Covington will play a 5pm doubleheader at Strasburg
Winchester hosts Front Royal
Staunton plays at Waynesboro
and New Market hosts Harrisonburg
The Washington Nationals swept a split doubleheader against Philadelphia yesterday, winning the opener 6-2, then taking the nightcap 2-0. In the afternoon game, the Nats banged out 6 extra base hits to back the solid pitching of Patrick Corbin. who gave up only 1 run in 7 innings. Brian Dozier and Gerardo Parra homered for the Nats in the opener.
In the evening contest, Max Scherzer, one day removed from a broken nose, struck out 10 in 7 innings of shutout baseball, and only needed solo homers from Dozier and Victor Robles to pick up his sixth win of the season. The Nationals and Phillies play the series finale tonight starting at 6:35 on CBS Sports Radio 1450.
The Baltimore Orioles losing streak as reached 8 after an 8-3 loss yesterday in Oakland. To add injury to insult, the O’s Trey Mancini had to leave the game with an elbow contusion after being hit by a pitch. The Birds now head to Seattle for a 10pm game tonight.
And, the USA women’s soccer team returns to action today in the FIFA World Cup. The 2-0 Americans will take on Sweden in a Group F match at 3pm. The USA women have outscored their competition 16-0 in their first 2 matches.
