SU Women’s LAX Advances, A Curly “L” For Nats, Derby Fave Scratched

Shenandoah University Women’s lacrosse advanced to the ODAC Tournament semifinals with a 12-11 win yesterday over Lynchburg. The Hornets, down by 2 goals at the half, dominated the second half to advance to the semis for the third straight year. SU will now take on number-one seed W&L Saturday at a time to be determined.

In track & field, Shamyra Wilkerson set two Shenandoah school records yesterday at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier in Lynchburg. Her times in the 100 & 200 meter sprints place her in the nation’s top 11 in both events. Jamie Ryan placed 10th in the javelin and Reed Davis finished 9th in the 5000 meter run.

In other SU athletic news, softball’s Morgan Henley has earned All-ODAC honors in selections announced yesterday by the league. The Poquoson product hit a team-best .380 this season and had 3 victories in the circle.

A new month, same result for the Washington Nationals, who fell for the third straight night to the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-1. Max Scherzer fell victim to a shoddy defense and gave up 3 runs in the first inning and took his 4th loss on the season. The Nats, losers of 9 of their last 12 games, try to avoid the sweep this afternoon. Air time from Nationals Park is 3:35 on Sports Radio 1450.

The Orioles split a pair of games with the Chicago White Sox yesterday, winning the opener 5-4, and dropping the nightcap in walk-off fashion 7-6. In the second game, the Sox scored 2 in the ninth to avoid the doubleheader sweep. The O’s are off today.

And, Kentucky derby favorite Omaha Beach has been scratched due to breathing issues. The 145th “Run For The Roses” takes place Saturday from Churchill Downs in Lexington. Post time is 6:46 pm.
