It’s Strasburg & C’Ville for the VBL Title, Nats Blank Giants

In the Valley Baseball League playoffs, the Charlottesville TomSox advanced to the league championship series last night with a 10-2 win over Staunton. The Sox will now play the Strasburg Express for the Lineweaver Cup in a best-of-three series, which starts tonight in Strasburg. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm.

The Washington Nationals blanked the San Francisco Giants last night 4-0. Erick Fedde hurled 6 innings of 6-hit baseball and the revamped Nats bullpen did the rest, as the Nationals pulled to within 6 games of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. Anthony Rendon drove in a run for the Nationals, who also scored on a double steal and a misplayed fly ball to pick up their 59th win of the season. The two teams play again tonight starting at 9:15 on Sports Radio 1450.

Off the field, the Nationals acquired Asdrubal Cabrera to give depth to an ailing bench. Cabrera, a former National and Mets fan favorite, was hitting .235 with 12 home runs before his release from Texas last week.

The New York Yankees posted 3 runs in the 8th inning to break a 6-all tie and beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-6 last night at Camden Yards.
Jonathan Villar had a 4-for-5 night for the Birds, who entertain the Yanks again tonight at 7:05.

Training camp continues for the Washington Redskins, who open the preseason Thursday night against the Browns. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 from Cleveland.
