Area Hoop Scores, Captains Sink SU, Caps PPD
In boy’s high school basketball yesterday, Staunton downed Page 67-41, Handley beat Dominion 55-37, Skyline got past Monroe 73-63, and Rappahannock defeated Riverheads 64-49. In girl’s hoop, Luray routed Stonewall-Quicksburg 55-28.
In NCAA exhibition basketball last night, Christopher Newport erased an early 13-1 Shenandoah lead and beat the Hornet men 98-86 at Wilkins Center. The Captains put the game away with a 17-2 run to start the second half and led by as many as 21. Jaylen Williams led SU with 25 points. Up next for the Hornets, a Thursday 7pm tip at Randolph, weather permitting.
Number-14 West Virginia broke open a tight contest late for a big 82-71 road win against number-7 Texas Tech last night. WVU improves to 14-5 on the season, and 7-3 in the Big 12. Tonight, 9th ranked Virginia plays at Georgia Tech. Tipoff is at 7.
And, the Washington Capitals’ game with the Philadelphia last night was postponed due to coronavirus issues on the Flyers’ squad. Next up for the Caps, a Sunday skate against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Air time is 2:45 on The River 95-3.
