Stanley Officer lost in the line of duty

The Town of Stanley and Page County Law Enforcement officials requested the assistance of Virginia State Police (VSP) in investigating the line of duty death of Stanley Police Officer Dominic Winum.

After initiating a traffic stop on Judy Lane Officer Winum was fatally shot by Dakota G. Richards.

As Officer Winum was exiting his patrol vehicle Richards jumped out of his vehicle and shot the Officer.

Richards of Stanley then fled on foot with law enforcement in pursuit.

Richards was tracked to a barn on Marksville Road.

Richards was shot by Page County Sheriff’s Deputies after he made a threatening move.

Officer Winum was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was a 5 year veteran of the Stanley Police Department.
