REC awards $101,000 to local nonprofits

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative announced the recipients of their bi-annual Power of Change Awards.

Through the Power of Change, member owners at REC voluntarily support nonprofits for those in need.

Over $101,000 was awarded to 24 nonprofits in the community this fall.

Some of those recipients include:

  • The 2 for 2 Foundation in Winchester which received $5,000 for their Swim Literacy Program
  • BRAWS, or Bringing Resources to Aid Women’s Shelters, in Frederick County received over $6,000 to provide undergarments and personal supplies for women and girls in need
  • Literacy Volunteers- Winchester Area was the recipient of $7,500 for their Family Literacy Program
  • Faithworks Winchester accepted $4,000 to supplement out of the ordinary and unexpected financial burdens for low income families and individuals
  • Living by His Grace Ministries in Front Royal received $5,000 to prevent the exploitation of children in the community
  • Front Royal/Warren County CCCAP’s Family Resource Center computer station acquired $1,500 through the program.

Applications for the Spring edition of The Power of Change opens on December 8th with the deadline to apply on February 10th, 2024.

REC members looking to give back to the community can participate by making a one time donation, enrolling in a set monthly amount, or rounding up on their monthly bill.

News Maker Linda Tyler on 2 for 2 breaking world records

On Oct. 29 the 2 for 2 Foundation attempted to break 2 world records to raise awareness to their efforts to bring an indoor pool and ice skating rink facility to the region.

We spoke with 2 for 2 Foundation Board Chairperson Linda Tyler about the attempt and what’s next for the Foundation in our latest news maker.

Linda tells us how the Guinness World Record Officials have to be provided with to insure the world record was broken.

She also explains that the 2 For 2 Foundation has been with the Guinness Officials for a while before the attempt was even made.

2 for 2 Foundation attempts world record and raises awareness

The 2 for 2 Foundation is inviting the community to the Frederick County Fairgrounds today at 10 am to attempt to break a world record and raise awareness to bring a new recreational facility to the area.

The Foundation is attempting to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest human ice cream cone.

There will also be an attempt to break the record for the world’s largest ice cream sandwich.

The Foundation’s goal for the event is to raise awareness for their efforts in bringing an indoor pool and skating rink to the Shenandoah Valley.

News Maker Kelly Warnagiris on Winchester Swim Team

Over 600 swimmers are at Jim Barnett Park this weekend.

The competition has already begin and will be held each day through June 19.

We spoke with Winchester Swim Team Administrator Kelly Warnagiris in our latest news maker.

Kelly tells us that competitors from several different states are in the meet along with over 80 local swimmers from local schools.

She also tells us that the 2 for 2 foundation will be at the meet this weekend to offer information on their efforts to raise funds for an indoor pool and ice skating rink in the area.

2 For 2 Foundation attempt indoor ice rink and pool facility

2 for 2 foundation

The 2 For 2 Foundation announced the first of several fundraising events will be held today Mar. 17.

The Foundation is attempting to establish a fully functional indoor ice skating and pool facility in the region.

There is a lot of local support for such a facility as sponsors see the potential for community active, regional employment opportunity as well as economic impact.

Many of the local supporters have donated over $1,800 worth of gifts to be given away at today’s event.

The Foundation will be at the Armstrong Irish Dance Academy at 2261 Valley Ave. Winchester at 4 p.m. for the Pot of Gold fundraiser.

Later this year the Foundation will attempt to break 2 Guinness world records by creating the largest ice cream sandwich and largest human ice cream cone.

News Makers Linda Tyler and Shelly Lee from 2 For 2 Foundation

The 2 for 2 Foundation is attempting to build an indoor ice skating rink and pool facility in the region.

We spoke with 2 For 2 Foundation board member Linda Tyler and fundraising chairperson Shelly Lee in our latest news maker.

The good news is brought to you by The Town of Front Royal.

Linda tells us that the ice skating rink will have it’s own Zamboni and is of regulation size.

The pool will be of Olympic size.

Both will be available for all to use if it can become a reality.

Shelly tells about the first fundraiser Pot of Gold event set for Mar. 17 starting at 4 p.m..

The Pot of Gold event is the first of several fundraisers planned.

Other fundraiser will include attempts to break world records.
