Page County Sheriff addresses the arrest of former deputy

Page County Sheriff Chad Cubbage addressed the report of the arrest of a former Page County Deputy on child pornography charges.

In an open response to the public, Sheriff Cubbage stated that he immediately began communicating with the arresting agency.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation against former Page County deputy Shadarryl Veney on August 8.

The investigation began after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was received.

Investigators found incriminating photos at Veney’s Grottoes home.

Sheriff Cubbage reports that as soon as he knew of the search warrant being executed, he terminated Veney’s employment.

The Sheriff did this action after confirming that it would not interfere with or jeopardize the evidence or investigation.

Sheriff Cubbage states that it is not appropriate to comment on the investigation in another jurisdiction.

The public is assured by Sheriff Cubbage that if there were an immediate danger to the public an appropriate message would be released and action taken.

Sheriff Cubbage also assures the public that his investigators take each background investigation seriously.

Investigators have multiple tools available to complete a thorough investigation of a new hire.

Veney had only been with the Page County Sheriff’s Office for approximately 2 years and is a military veteran.

Veney turned himself into authorities on Friday September 29 and has been released on bond.

Where transparency is important the right to know may be delayed protecting the integrity of the case according to Sheriff Cubbage.
