Cavs End 3-Game Slide, WVU Takes Big Jump, SU Update

Virginia ended a 3-game losing streak last night with a 62-51 win against Miami. The number-21 Cavaliers got a combined 30 points from the duo of Sam Hauser and Trey Murphy, as they improved to 16-6 on the season.

In the latest AP College Basketball Poll, WVU sits just outside the top 5 at number 6 after a 4-point jump this week. Aforementioned UVA fell to number 21, while Virginia Tech dropped to number 22. The Mountaineers have a 5pm tip this afternoon against 3rd-ranked Baylor in Morgantown.

On the Shenandoah University sports scene, Men’s Golf sits in 4th, while Women’s Golf is in 6th place after day one of the Pfeiffer Invitational in Hilton Head, South Carolina. That tournament continues today. And the seedings of the ODAC Basketball Tournament were announced yesterday, with the 5th-seeded Women travelling to 4th-seed Roanoke Friday at 5. The 7th-seeded Men will travel to number-2 Ferrum on Saturday. game time TBA.

Caps-Pens Tonight, AP College Hoop Poll, Hokies Return To The Hardwoods

The Washington capitals are back on the ice tonight when the host the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Caps are 9-5-3, and tied for second in the NHL’s Eastern Division. The Pens are right behind with 19 points. Air time is 6:45 on The River 95-3.

The latest AP College Basketball Poll is out, and Virginia took a big drop to number-15 after it’s recent loss to Duke. Virginia Tech took a 2-point jump to number 16, while the West Virginia Mountaineers rose to number-10 after going 3-1 in four straight games against ranked teams. Gonzaga remains the top-ranked team in the country at 22-0.

On the hardwoods tonight, Virginia Tech returns to action when they host Georgia Tech tonight at 7. Meanwhile, WVU continues it’s 3-game swing through Texas when they face TCU at 7 o’clock.

And, the Washington Nationals have their first full-squad workout today at their Spring Training facility in West Palm Beach, Florida. Some of the new Nats this year include first-baseman Josh Bell and reliever Jon Lester, who will join mainstays like Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer, and Juan Soto. Area Hoop Scoreboard, SU Women Roll, Caps-Flyers Tonight

In area girl’s high school basketball yesterday, Rappahannock routed William Campbell 57-17, Luray downed Stuarts Draft 67-29, it was Page over Strasburg 57-36, and Brentsville shaded Skyline 38-35.

In boy’s hoop, Page beat Madison 67-51, Monroe powered past Central 67-39, Buffalo Gap got past Strasburg 49-43, and East Rockingham cruised in a 76-43 win over Clarke.

The Shenandoah University Women led wire-to-wire in a 61-43 ODAC win over Ferrum last night at Wilkins Center. SU raced out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back in earning it’s first league win. Sarah Sondrol led a balanced Hornet attack with 13 points.

The Shenandoah men entertain Christopher Newport tonight at 6. Mike O’Dell and Dick Helm provide the play-by-play tonight on The River 95-3.

Virginia moved into the top 10 in the latest AP College Basketball Poll. The Cavaliers jumped 5 spots this week to number-9. Virginia Tech fell 2 spots to number-18, while WVU rose 3 spots to number-14. The Mountaineers continue their gauntlet of ranked teams tonight when they play at 7th-ranked Texas Tech at 9.

And, the Washington Capitals try to break a 3-game losing skid tonight when they skate against the Philadelphia Flyers. The 6-3-3 Caps are currently in third place in the NHL’s East Division with 15 points. The puck drops at 6.

Bruins Rally To Beat Caps, SU Hoop Tonight, MLB Season To Start On Time

The Boston Bruins erased a 3-0 deficit, and posted 4 goals in the third period to hand the Washington Capitals a 5-3 loss last night. The defeat was the first regulation loss for the Caps, who fell to 6-1-3 on the season. The Capitals will skate against the Rangers tomorrow night, starting

Shenandoah University Men’s Basketball returns to the Wilkins Center tonight to take on Randolph-Macon. No fans will be permitted, but you can hear the game on The River 95-3. Tip off is at 7.

In other SU news, Women’s Basketball’s Sarah Sondrol was named ODAC player of the week. For the week, Sondrol racked up 43 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 63 percent from the floor. The Hornet Women are back in action tomorrow.

Local HS Hoop Scoreboard, VT and UVA Move Up In AP Poll, Caps-Pens Tonight

There were several area high school basketball games yesterday. In boys action, William Monroe downed Warren County 57-43, while Rappahannock beat Madison 56-38. In girls hoop, Monroe defeated Warren County 64-48, and Madison nipped Strasburg 61-59.

Big moves for both Virginia and Virginia Tech in the latest AP college basketball poll. The Cavaliers jump 5 places to number 13, while the Hokies took a 4-spot jump to number-16. Despite not playing, WVU fell to number-14. Duke fell out of the top-25 for the first time since 2016, while Gonzaga remained the top team in the country.

The Capitals and Penguins will skate again tonight in Pittsburgh. At 2-0-1, the Caps lead the NHL’s brand new East Division with 5 points. The Pens handed Washington it’s first loss of the season Sunday, a 4-3 decision that was decided in a shootout. Air time tonight is 6:45 on The River 95-3.

And the Washington Wizards’ game that was scheduled for Wednesday against Charlotte was postponed due to coronavirus issues. That marks their fifth straight game that’s been postponed. The Wizards had six players test positive late last week, and three others have been ruled out due to contact tracing.

Tide Rolls To CFP Title, WVU-Baylor Canceled, Hokies Host Blue Devils Tonight

Alabama quarterback Mac Jones threw for 464 yards and 5 touchdowns as the Crimson Tide rolled over Ohio State 52-24 to win the College Football Playoff Championship last night in Miami. Bama broke open a tight game with a 28-point second quarter, effectively ending the game by halftime. Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith hauled in 12 passes for 215 yards, as the Tide captured it’s 18th national championship.

In the latest AP College Basketball Poll, Virginia comes in at number 18, while Virginia Tech is number 20 this week. Despite losing 2 of it’s last 3, WVU moves up a spot to number 13. Gonzaga remains the number one team in the country.

On the docket tonight, the Hokies host number-19 Duke at 7, while the Mountaineers’ contest at number-2 Baylor has been canceled due to coronavirus issues on the WVU squad.

And, Bradley Beal poured in 34, as the Washington Wizards beat the Phoenix Suns, 128-107.
