Belle Grove explores African American history

Belle Grove Plantation is open and free to the public today from 8 am to 4 pm for special programming on the history of African Americans on the site and around the Valley.

Belle Grove will welcome special guests from The Slave Dwelling Project which held other events earlier in the week at Blandy Farm, Burwell Morgan Mill, and St Thomas Chapel in Middletown.

Each hour will feature speakers or presentations on topics like the life of an enslaved cook and the complicated road to freedom.

Special guest Cheney McKnight of the hit YouTube channel “Not Your Momma’s History” will host a discussion about experiences of enslaved people throughout North America.

These talks will all be available on Zoom as well with a link to register found here.

Belle Grove’s Annual GardenFest

Today is the Annual GardenFest and Master Gardener Plant Sale at Belle Grove Plantation from 8 am – 2 pm.

Admission and parking are free and all plants are for sale for $5.

Plant sale proceeds benefit Virginia Cooperative Extensions educational programming in Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah, and Warren Counties.

There will also be children’s activities, historic garden tours, information booths and more.

Tours will also be available for the Belle Grove Manor House from 10 AM to 4 PM.

News Maker Kristen Laise on Of Ale and History

Belle Grove Plantation will host Of Ale and History this Saturday May 7.

This marks the return of the festival since the pandemic.

We spoke with Belle Grove Plantation Executive Director Kristen Laise about the return of the festival in our latest news maker.

The good news is brought to you by The Town of Front Royal.

Kristen tells us the festival is making a strong return with 13 breweries from all across Virginia.

She also tells us of all the activities that are scheduled for the day.

Belle Grove celebrates opening day

Belle Grove Plantation’s Opening Day for the 2022 season is today.

From 10 am to 4 pm, admission is free to the grounds and museum.

This season will feature the new exhibit Unearthing Enslaved Lives at Belle Grove.

From 2015-2019 archaeologists excavated over 60,000 artifacts from the Enslaved Quarter Site.

This helped them learn how the over 270 enslaved people lived at the plantation and their effect on the history and economy of the Shenandoah Valley.

Belle Grove’s Kris Kringle Market

The Belle Grove Plantation is hosting the Kris Kringle Outdoor Market from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

After the success from last year, they made it bigger and better.

This weekend will feature a visit from Santa Clause, a petting zoo, a wreath making class, live music, and a free ballet performance.

Food, warm beverages, and crafts from local artisans will be for sale.

Admission is free to the market but the regular fee still applies for a tour of the home.

Belle Grove Plantation host living history demonstration

The Cider Creek Battlefield Foundation presents a living history weekend at Belle Grove Plantation Middletown.

Historians will demonstrate many aspects of life in from the mid-19 century.

Demonstrations will be available for the family with historians in full dress from the period.

Demonstrations include period photography, a recruit muster, practice drill, games, cooking class and more.

Activities begin early tomorrow May 15 and last through the weekend.

Belle Grove Plantation resumes tours Saturday

Belle Grove Plantation in Middletown Virginia resumes tours this Sat. Mar. 20.

Tours are offered Wednesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

On Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m..

The historic grounds and Welcoming Center including shop and exhibits are open Mondays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. as well.

For the time being COVID-19 restrictions will have to be observed with groups being limited to ten guest at a time.
