Belle Grove explores African American history

Belle Grove Plantation is open and free to the public today from 8 am to 4 pm for special programming on the history of African Americans on the site and around the Valley.

Belle Grove will welcome special guests from The Slave Dwelling Project which held other events earlier in the week at Blandy Farm, Burwell Morgan Mill, and St Thomas Chapel in Middletown.

Each hour will feature speakers or presentations on topics like the life of an enslaved cook and the complicated road to freedom.

Special guest Cheney McKnight of the hit YouTube channel “Not Your Momma’s History” will host a discussion about experiences of enslaved people throughout North America.

CCHA hosts 10th Annual Heritage Day

The Clarke County Historical Association is hosting their 10th Annual Heritage Day today from 11 am to 4 pm at the Burwell Morgan Mill in Millwood.

There will be live demonstrations of colonial era people working and their daily lives.

Some of those demos will include blacksmithing, cider pressing, wood turning, weaving and more.

Then come back at 7pm for the Legends by Lantern Light.

This tour will have a different angle on the history of the area from the earlier session and will have interpreters sharing stories of families divided by war, a famous heiress of the 20th century and much more.
