An email from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced the needed closure of Historic Meems Bottom Bridge once again for repairs.

The closure begins today Nov. 8 for needed repairs after the latest bridge strike being done while repairs from a previous strike were being made.

The email went on to state that the bridge has been struck at least 11 times between 2019 and 2020.

Multiple signs have been posted to warn that the bridge can only allow vehicles under 10 feet tall, below 12 feet wide and under 13 tons are permitted on the structure.

Despite the signs the bridge has been struck several times most recently Oct. 25.

Route 270 and the bridge will have to close for those repairs with motorist advised to use alternate routes.

The Meems Bottom Bridge is included on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.

The landmark is off of Rt. 11 in Mount Jackson and dates back to 1894.

The structure is one of the few covered bridges in the United States and has been the sight of weddings and other events.
