Virginia State Police (VSP) report responding to over 13 crashes involving stolen vehicles including an ambulance.

The first crash was reported at approximately 3:40 p.m. August 12  in the eastbound lane of Interstate 66 at mile marker 74.

The truck that caused the crash was reported stolen and fled the scene.

The driver of the stolen truck was later identified as Brandywine Maryland resident 30-year-old Darell T. Caldwell.

The driver of the other vehicle in that crash was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

About a minute after that crash was being worked a report of multi vehicle crashes on Interstate 395 in Arlington County came in.

That crash was caused by the same stolen truck and 5 people had to be transported to the hospital in that incident.

Caldwell had fled that scene on foot.

Only minutes later another crash was reported on the George Washington Parkway involving another stolen truck driven by Caldwell.

That incident had Caldwell driving the wrong way on George Washington Parkway striking another vehicle.

An Arlington County Ambulance responding to the 395 crashes came upon the crash on George Washington Parkway and rendered aid to the drivers.

While medics tended to the victims Caldwell entered the ambulance and drove off.

A state trooper caught up to the ambulance and Caldwell refused to stop.

At one point the ambulance did stop and as the trooper started towards the vehicle Caldwell threw it in reverse and rammed the trooper’s cruiser.

After that collision Caldwell took the ambulance onto 395 and into Washington DC where he struck a parked vehicle head on and came to a stop.

Caldwell was taken into custody without further incident at that point.

VSP have accounted for 13 hit and run incidents involving the ambulance.

There were no other reports of serious injuries in the incidents however authorities continue to investigate.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have been involved in crashes involving Caldwell on August 12 to contact them.

Anyone with any information is encouraged to call the VSP at 703-803-0026.

Caldwell has been transported to the hospital for evaluation with federal, local and state charges pending.
