Investigation into Officer Winum’s death continues

The investigation of Stanley Police Officer Dominic Winum’s death continues.

Before the traffic stop Winum’s assailant Dakota G. Richards was reported as a suspicious person with a gun.

Richards was found to have both a handgun in his vehicle and a Smith and Wesson M and P-15 rifle in his possession at the time of his death by Page County Deputies.

Officer Winum’s viewing is today Mar. 3 until 5 p.m. at the Bethlehem Independent Christian Church in Stanley.

Stanley Officer lost in the line of duty

The Town of Stanley and Page County Law Enforcement officials requested the assistance of Virginia State Police (VSP) in investigating the line of duty death of Stanley Police Officer Dominic Winum.

After initiating a traffic stop on Judy Lane Officer Winum was fatally shot by Dakota G. Richards.

As Officer Winum was exiting his patrol vehicle Richards jumped out of his vehicle and shot the Officer.

Richards of Stanley then fled on foot with law enforcement in pursuit.

Richards was tracked to a barn on Marksville Road.

Richards was shot by Page County Sheriff’s Deputies after he made a threatening move.

Officer Winum was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was a 5 year veteran of the Stanley Police Department.
