Winchester Public Schools is still searching for new members to the Superintendent’s Advisory Council for the 2025-2026 School Year.
As a member of the council, community members can share ideas and insights they believe will help increase family and community engagement across all the schools in Winchester.
The goal of the group is to create a more connected and supportive learning environment.
A brief form must be filled out online to indicate interest in joining the advisory council.
On the form, applicants will provide contact information, a brief explanation on their reason for wanting to join the Superintendent’s Advisory Council, and their role in the Winchester Public Schools community.

All meetings will take place at the Douglas School from 6- 8pm and will be held on December 10th, March 11th, and May 13th.

Winchester Public Schools needs crossing guards for the upcoming school year and residents can earn up to $600 a month working just two hours per day while helping keep our kids get to school safely.
To become a crossing guard you must be:
The shifts available begin in the morning from 7:15 am – 8 am and in the afternoon from 2:15 pm – 3 pm at Virginia Avenue Charlotte DeHart Elementary School.
Crossing guards are paid monthly at $30 per day and all training is provided at $15 per hour.

Winchester Public Schools will celebrate the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of the recently renovated and expanded Douglas School on Saturday, June 8th at 10 am.
The former school located at 598 N Kent Street served black students during segregation in Winchester from 1927-1966.
After integration, the building was used as an intermediate, elementary and preschool before being deemed unsafe.
The City of Winchester provided funding in 2021 to begin the renovations to house the school system’s central office, a community space, and a museum on honoring the history of Douglas.
Saturday’s ceremony will include remarks from local leaders and alumni followed by a car show featuring vehicles from the school’s era of operation.
The building and museum will be open to guests and light refreshments will be served.

Today at 2 pm, the Virginia Department of Historical Resources is unveiling a historical highway marker honoring Dr. Madison Spencer Briscoe.
The ceremony will take place at his childhood home on 204 South Kent Street.
The Winchester native and Douglas school graduate received his doctorate in parasitology and was a professor at Storer College and Howard University.
He later served in the Army as a commander during WWII.
His work saved countless soldiers’ lives by protecting them from diseases spread by parasites and contaminated water.
