An email from Governor Northam states with the passing of former Governor Linwood Holton Virginia flags are to fly at half staff for 30 days.

Holton was the first republican governor of Virginia in the 20th century as the 61st governor.

According to Wikipedia while governor Holton increased employment for blacks and woman in state government.

He is also credited with creating the Virginia Governor’s School Program in 1973.

Holton a lawyer served as governor from 1970 to 74.

Holton died last night at the age of 98.
