The Town of Front Royal announced the dedication of the North Commerce Avenue Bridge on Wednesday September 20.

The dedication ceremony will start at 11 a.m. in honor and memory of Sergeant Dennis M. Smedley, formerly of the Front Royal Police Department.

It was on September 20, 1983, that Sergeant Smedley was killed in an ambush in front of his home in Front Royal as he prepared to make his way to work at the police department.

The case of Sergeant Smedley’s death remains unsolved to this date.

The dedication ceremony will honor Sergeant Smedley in the community he was dedicated to serving and protecting.
