GMU partners with NASA on first space mission

George Mason University and NASA are partnering to place an artificial “star” in orbit around the Earth.

The device will allow scientists to calibrate telescopes and more accurately measure the brightness of nearby stars and explosions of supernovae in far-off galaxies.

This mission will begin to address several challenges of astrophysics including the speed and acceleration of universe expansion.

The artificial “star” will launch in 2029 with a known emission rate of photons to compare for star brightness and shine eight lasers at optical telescopes on the ground to help with calibration.

Utilizing these more accurate measurements, scientists will be able to enhance their understanding of stellar evolution and set a foundation for future discoveries.

Once in orbit at 22,236 miles up, the artificial “star”, which is roughly the size of a breadbox, will not be visible to the naked eye but can be viewed through personal telescopes.

REC names Karen Mills Director of Facilities Management

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative announced the hiring of Karen Mills as the new Director of Facilities Management.

She will oversee the acquisition, construction, maintenance and operations of the Coop’s facilities and grounds as well as develop and maintain policies and procedures.

Mills previously served as the Senior Manager of Facilities Services for Washington Gas and before that worked with various technology companies.

She is a Virginia native and graduate of George Mason University.

REC’s Managing Director Tosh Bowe said, “Her extensive knowledge and experience will ensure efficient operations and effective resource utilization at the Cooperative.”

LFCC offers easily transferable cybersecurity classes

Lord Fairfax Community College is offering a cybersecurity engineering associate degree program designed to be transferred to other universities.

This associate degree is designed to transfer into a bachelor’s degree with some students able to go for even more advance degrees.

Some students may even be able to co-enroll in cybersecurity engineering classes taught by George Mason University (GMU) at LFCC tuition rates.
