Anyone care for a nog?  I’ll bet your mind went immediately to eggnog and you either said “yeah” or “neigh.”  Did  you ever wonder what exactly nog was?  According to one online dictionary, a nog as a small block or peg of wood.  Dictionary dot com defines it as, one, any beverage made with beaten eggs, usually with alcoholic liquor and two, a strong ale formally brewed in Norfolk, England.  The first known use of the word nog is from 1693 and it was used in the context of the strong ale.  The exact origin of the word is not known.  I, myself, enjoy a cold glass of eggnog.  I remember once, when I was young, our neighbors brought us a quart of homemade eggnog.  I thought I’d give it a try.  When I opened it there was an unfamiliar odor, but I went ahead a poured a big glass.  I raised the glass to my lips and took a big swallow. There was a sweet taste, then a warm sensation followed by an after taste. For some reason, it that warm feeling continued all the way to my stomach.  When I asked my mom what was in the eggnog she said “brandy.”  My parents did not drink alcohol and, as it turned out, my mom only knew it was brandy is because the neighbor had told her.  Mom, not wanting to offend the neighbor, graciously accepted the spiked eggnog, put it in the fridge and hadn’t had a chance to dispose of it before I snuck a glass.  Occasionally, if I happen to have some on hand, I’ll add a splash of Kailua to a glass or two.
