WPR hosts holiday open house

Winchester Parks and Recreation is hosting a holiday open house today from 9 am – 11 am at the Rec Center in Jim Barnett Park.

The event is free and will feature a variety of activities including an adult Zumba class set to holiday music.

For the kids, their will be an elf scavenger hunt, ornament decorating, and more.

A Gingerbread House station will be open but will require pre-registration.

Raffles will be held to benefit the Winchester Parks Foundation.

Some of the prizes include gift cards to Old Town Winchester Businesses, Shenandoah University and Winchester Royals gear, and more.

Winchester Parks and Recreation offer acting classes

A social media post from Jim Barnett Park announced the creation of acting classes in conjunction with Selah Theatre Project.

The classes are for ages 3 to 18 years of age in both stage acting and acting through song.

The first class is Jan. 4 with a registration deadline of Dec. 28 for students 3 to 5 and 9 to 12 years of age.

The first date for 6 to 8 and 13 to 17 year old students is Jan. 6 with a registration deadline of Dec. 30.

The class Acting Through Song is Jan. 6 for those 10 to 18 years of age will be offered a registration deadline of Dec. 28.

A music and me class for 5 to 8 year old students is Jan. 5 with registration deadline set for Dec. 29.

The classes will be held in the evenings at the Selah Theatre Project at 811 S. Loudoun St. Winchester.

Rabies and Vaccine Clinic

Today from 10 am – 2 pm, Dakota’s Dream Animal Rescue and Veterinary Community Outreach are holding a rabies and vaccination clinic at Jim Barnett Park.

This is a great opportunity to take care of your furry friend at a greatly reduced cost.

Rabies Vaccines at $10, Microchipping for $20, a wellness package for rabies, distemper and deworming for $25, and nail trimmings by a donation to the Fast and the Furriest.

Jim Barnett Park host an Employer Expo hiring fair

An Employer’s Expo hiring fair will be held at the Jim Barnett Park’s Recreation Center Oct.21 from 1-7 p.m..

Have a resume ready or join the work shop for advanced resume writing.

Local hiring managers will be on hand and  may choose to interviews on site.

The event at 1001 E. Cork Street will also have several types of workshops available.

According to the City’s flyer on the event full time and part time jobs will be available as well as internships.

SU celebrates the community with a fireworks display

Shenandoah University (SU) will host the first ever fall festival fireworks show at 8 p.m. Saturday Sept. 18.

The University is celebrating the broader community and offering the display as a way of honoring and thanking the community in helping the institution achieve it’s recent successes.

The school hopes to make the display an annual event each mid Sept.

SU is asking that the display be viewed from the convenient public parking around the campus.

Areas like Jim Barnett Park closer to Wilkins Lake will offer some of the best viewing.

Should it rain the fireworks show will be moved to Sunday Sept. 19.

Parks and Recreation around the region open pools

Summer water fun is ready to open around the region.

Warren County Parks and Recreation Department announced that the Warren County Splash Pad opens at noon until 6 today May 22.

The splash pad is behind the Raymond E. Santmyers Youth Center on 8 St. Front Royal.

The outdoor pool at Jim Barnett Park Winchester opens next Sat. May 29.

The Water Park at Massanutten Resort opens next Sat. May 29 as well.

All facilities will follow COVID-19 requirements.

Kiwanis Club Pancake Day is tomorrow 5/22

Winchester Kiwanis Club Pancake Day is tomorrow May 22 it is a drive thru event.

The event is held at the Jim Barnett Park’s War Memorial building from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Tickets need to be purchased ahead of time from a Kiwanis member or call (540) 667-2490 to make ticket arrangements.

All proceeds will benefit Bright Futures of Frederick County Winchester.

SU will offer fireworks at Apple Blossom

Shenandoah University (SU) announced it will host a fireworks show during the 94 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival.

The display will be held at 9:30 p.m. Sat. May 1 the rain date is Sun. May 2.

Because many campus roads will be closed on Friday and Saturday nights the University is asking that off campus viewing be done.

Viewing can be done at the neighboring parking lots like Jim Barnett Park.
