VBL Scoreboard, Schwarber Hits 2 More As Nats Win, O’s Blanked Again
In the Valley Baseball League last night, Woodstock took 2 from Winchester, 1-0 and 4-1. Purcellville stopped Front Royal 6-2, while Strasburg rolled over New Market 15-4. C’ville and Harrisonburg were also winners.
Tonight in the VBL, games include Front Royal at Purcellville, Winchester at New Market, and Strasburg at home against Woodstock.
Kyle Schwarber’s 2 home runs led the Washington Nationals past Miami last night 7-3. Schwarber has now hit 8 homers in his last 5 games, as the Nats won for the 10th time in 11 games. Joe Ross tossed 7 shutout innings for the Nationals, who take on Miami again tonight starting at 6:40 on Sports Radio 1450.
The baltimore Orioles were shut out again last night, this time by the Toronto Blue Jays, 9-0. The Birds, who have now gone scoreless in their last 24 innings, will take on the Jays again tonight at 7:07.
And, the Montreal Canadiens are headed to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1993 after beating Las Vegas last night 3-2 in overtime.

Martin Nabs ODAC POW Honor, Caps Double Up Rangers, Nats-Braves Tonight
On the Shenandoah University sports scene, Freshman Colby Martin was named ODAC Baseball Player Of The Week in selections announced yesterday by the league office. Martin, the Hornets’ second baseman, hit .526 last week as number-15 SU went 4-1. Martin had 2 doubles, 2 home runs, and 6 RBI for the week as he went 10-for-19. SU Baseball will compete in the ODAC Tournament this weekend.
The Washington Capitals, playing without Evgeny Kuznetsov , TJ Oshie, and Alex Ovechkin for all but 39 seconds, beat the New York Rangers 6-3 last night. The Caps, who got goals from 6 different players, moved back into a first place tie in the NHL’s Eastern Division with less than 2 weeks to play. The Capitals and Rangers skate again tomorrow at 6:45 on The River 95-3.
The Nationals start a 3-game series with the Atlanta Braves tonight. The Nats , who sit atop the NL East at 12-12, will send Joe Ross to the mound for the 6:35 air time on Sports Radio 1450.
And, the Orioles scored 5 runs in the 8th inning last night to nip the Seattle Mariners 5-3. The two teams play tonight at 10:10.

SU Update, Caps Win Defensive Battle, Nats-Mets Series Begins Tonight
On the Shenandoah University scoreboard, Softball swept Eastern Mennonite, taking the opener 6-5, then the nightcap 10-2. Meanwhile, undefeated W&L swept Volleyball. Today, Women’s Tennis competes at Washington & Lee, while Softball plays at number-one ranked Virginia Wesleyan.
A full slate of Hornet Athletics is scheduled for the weekend, including nationally-ranked Baseball at Ferrum, and Men & Women’s Golf in the ODAC Championships.
Evgeny Kuznetsov lit the lamp in the shootout period, and the Washington Capitals won a tight, defensive battle against the New York Islanders 1-0. The win puts the Caps alone atop the NHL’s Eastern Division. The Capitals take on the Islanders again tomorrow, starting at 6:45 on the River 95-3.
And, the Nationals return to action tonight when they start a weekend series in New York against the Mets. The 7-9 Nats trail the first-place Mets by just a game in the tight NL East. Air time tonight is 6:40 on Sports Radio 1450. Joe Ross takes the hill for Washington against 3-0 Marcus Stroman.

SU Scoreboard, Ross Shines In Nats Win, Caps-Sabres Tonight
On the Hornet scoreboard, SU Women’s Lacrosse held off Randolph-Macon 15-14, Number-15 Baseball split a twinbill with Penn State-Harrisburg, dropping the opener 7-3, and taking the nightcap 7-1. Mary Washington rallied to beat Men’s Lacrosse 14-11. Today, Volleyball travels to Eastern Mennonite.
Joe Ross pitched 6 innings of shutout baseball, giving up only 4 hits, as the Washington Nationals blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 yesterday in the getaway game of the 3-game series. Ryan Zimmerman smacked a 2-run homer for the Nats, who took 2-of-3 against the Cards. The 3-6 Nationals now head to Arizona for a 7:05 first-pitch against the D-Backs. Air time is 6:35 on Sports Radio 1450.
And, the Capitals are back on the ice tonight when they host the Buffalo Sabres. The Caps, who are alone at the top of the NHL’s Eastern Division, have scored 14 goals in their last 2 games. Air time is 6:45 on the River 95-3.
