Roger Smelser receives Larry M. Funk Award

The Warren Coalition awarded the Larry M. Funk Award for Outstanding Service to Children in Warren County to Roger Smelser.

This is a new award honoring the former Vice President and President of the organization who also served as the DARE instructor for the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

Roger Smelser was honored for his work with Front Royal Little League as a coach, manager, and president for over 30 years.

Nearly a third of nominations for the award named Smelser.

They brought up his commitment to the children in his league and passion for volunteer service.

He was also an instrumental part in bringing Little League Baseball back to the WFTR airwaves.

He received an engraved crystal award and $500 cash.

News Maker Christa Shifflett on the Larry M. Funk award

Applications for the very first Larry M. Funk memorial award are being accepted through June 3.

Nominations are open for those who provide outstanding service to children in the community.

The award will be presented at the Warren Coalition’s annual luncheon on July 28.

We spoke to Warren Coalition’s Executive Director Christa Shifflett in our latest news maker.
