Lonnie's Fun Fact for Thursday November 14, 2019. Stop Signs Used to Be Yellow. The first stop sign appeared in Detroit in 1915 and for the first years of its use across the country, it was made in a wide range of colors, before settling on a consistent one in the 1920s: yellow. The idea was that this color would have the greatest amount of visibility for both day and night (red looked dark at night).
