PCSO responds to a drowning on the Shenandoah river

The Page County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) reports the drowning of a man near Compton Rapids on July 7.

Page County Emergency Communications Center took the initial call of the possible drowning just 4 p.m. 

On arrival Page County authorities found the victim had been pulled from the water by community members who attempted life saving measures but were unsuccessful.

Emergency Medical Personnel pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

Multiple witnesses reported that the victim became distressed and went underwater and never resurfaced.

The victim was identified as Washington DC resident Melvin Sorto.

No foul play is suspected in the death of the 37-year-old Sorto.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the drowning pending the Medical Examiner’s findings.
