VSP investigate a wrong way crash on 81 in Shenandoah County

The Virginia State Police (VAP) report by email that a Honda Civic was traveling south on Interstate 81 in Shenandoah County and collided head on with a north bound Honda CRV.

The crash occurred Saturday March 9 just past 1 p.m. at mile marker 298.

Marlena Martinez of Sterling Virginia was wearing her seatbelt but suffered serious injuries and had to be transported to Winchester Medical Center.

The driver of the CRV 54-year-old Dennis W. Shipe of New Market and an adult passenger were also wearing their seatbelts and were left uninjured in the crash.

The 30-year-old Martinez was served a summons while in the hospital and has been charged.

Martinez was traveling in the wrong direction on the Interstate and has been charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence.

The crash remains under investigation by the VSP.
