Last living WW 2 Medal of Honor recipient passes at 98

The announcement was made by his foundation that Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams has passed away.

Williams who was affectionately known as Woody was the last living World War 2 Medal of Honor recipient.

Condolences continue to came in from all over the country and all military branches after the loss of Williams.

Williams passed away at the age of 98 June 29 at 3:15 in the morning.

The former Marine from Quiet Dell West Virginia enlisted in 1943 eventually landing in Iwo Jima where his actions earned him the Medal of Honor for valor.

After serving his country as a Marine Williams went on to create the Woody Williams Foundation to help support Veterans and Gold Star families across the nation.

Williams passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Huntington West Virginia VA Medical Center that bears his name.

Condolences and sympathies can be sent to the Woody Williams Foundation.

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice has ordered flags in the state be lowered immediately through sunset July 4.

Justice has also nominated Williams to be the first Veteran to be inducted into the newly created West Virginia Military Hall of Fame.
