Virginia became the first state to conduct an interment for a former Guardsmen, Reservist, or family member after the burial of David A. Corona who was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy Reserve after 8 years of service.

This interment was made possible following the passage of the Burial Equity for Guards and Reserves Act.

The law allows former Guardsmen and Reservists and their eligible dependents to be honored with a final resting place at any state veteran cemetery.

Previously, state veteran cemeteries were limited to those who served 24 consecutive months on active duty.

Former Guardsmen and Reservists who previously applied and were denied are encouraged to re-apply.
