Special Olympic Torch passes through New Market

The New Market Police Department along with players from the New Market Rebels baseball team participated in the Special Olympics Torch Run this week.

Law enforcement agencies and local businesses across the Commonwealth came together for the torch run.

The Flame of Hope traveled over 1,900 miles in eight days with the help of over 2000 law enforcement officers and personnel representing over 200 agencies.

The flame traveled its final mile yesterday to Richmond as part of the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Games.

Valley League Baseball lost an iconic member yesterday morning Oct. 7.

The New Market Rebels social media page announced that their President and General Manager of the team, Bruce Alger past away early Thur..

A supporter of the Rebels since 1965 Alger lost his battle with cancer at the age of 68.

Alger was also a chamber of commerce member for New Market receiving the Chamber’s President award in 2002 and Outstanding Citizen Award in 2009 according to his bio on the team’s website.

Alger was also on the Valley League Baseball board of directors serving as their Executive Director for 7 years.

There will be a memorial service at Rebel Park in New Market on Mon. Oct. 11 at 11 a.m..
