Fun Fact October 11, 2021.

Feed me, Seymour!  Inspiration for these fun facts comes from many sources.  Today’s is from my son Levi’s most recent science project.  He had to pick a plant to profile and he picked the Venus Flytrap.  I had one of these when I was about his age.  Like most, my knowledge of this carnourvous plant was that it ate insects.  I thought it grew in some far off exotic tropical island, but I was wrong.  Did you know that the Venus Flytrap grows, in the wild, exclusively within a 75 mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina?  Neither did I!  It actually grows wild in poor soil that other plants can’t and helps with reforestation after a wild fire.  Of course, they are grown commercially but the wild version is on the endanger list  due to loss of that habitat.  Another cool fact is that they don’t typically trap pollinators, only ants or spiders that venture into their heart shaped “mouth.” The plant is capable of photosynthesis, like other green plants, but it supplements what it needs to survive by catching and digesting insects.   Listen to the podcast here; https://theriver953.com/lonnies-fun-fact/
