Former Front Royal Resident’s murderer is sentenced

The murderer of a former Front Royal resident and Chelsea Academy and 2020 Christendom College graduate has received 40 years for his crime.

Mathew Thomas Weissing plead no contest Wednesday January 10 in the murder of Michael Echaniz who had acquired a teaching job in San Antonio Texas.

The San Antonio Express and Pressreader reports that the 23-year-old Echaniz was found fatally shot next to his car outside his apartment on March 10, 2022.

Weissing was arrested for the crime two weeks later.

Bexar County Texas Attorney General Joe D. Gonzales stated that the incident stemmed from jealousy.

Weissing appeared unable to accept the breakup of his girlfriend to Echaniz.

Witness confirmation and video footage along with cellphone messages showed evidence of Weissing’s involvement in the murder.

Weissing will have to serve at least 20 years of the 40-year sentence before he becomes eligible for parole.

Law and Crime reports that former Chelsea Academy classmates have created the Michael Echaniz Teacher of the Year Award to honor his memory.

A stipend is awarded to a teacher at Echaniz’s alma mater annually.
