Views From The Booth: Idiotic Golf Fans

(Posted 6-22-26)

Greetings from The Booth!

I hope all the Dads out there had a great Sunday! I actually got to watch 7 hours of golf on Father’s Day without any complaints from my better half. That only happens once a year–Sunday at the US Open. If I tried to watch 7 hours of the “XYZ Dot Com Classic,” I would be sent straight to the Dog House, where there probably is no wi-fi.

In case you missed golf’s third major, Wyndham Clark won his second US Open in four years (he was the 2023 Champion), by holding off fellow American Sam Burns. World number-one Scottie Scheffler, who was paired with Clark on Sunday and was clearly the fan favorite, was stuck in neutral all day and finished at even par on the brutal Shinnecock Hills course on Long Island.

SIDEBAR: I like Scheffler. In fact, he was my pick to win the US Open and complete the “Scottie Slam.” But enough about the “World Number One” crap. Because of golf’s complicated ranking system that only a math major from MIT can figure out, Scheffler remains at number one. He hasn’t had a great year by his standards, with several runner-up finishes, and eight top-tens, but no “major wins,” which is a benchmark of the top player in the world. I’m not the biggest Tiger Woods fan, but Tiger in his prime would have found a way to win yesterday, if only by intimidation. Jack Nicklaus within 4 shots of a lead in a major was a frightening thought to those in contention on the Sunday of a major. Scheffler never made the big putts yesterday when he had several chances to grab the tournament by the short hair. This is a discussion for another day.

Let’s talk about the fan behavior at Shinnecock on Sunday. Clearly, the majority wanted Scheffler to win. After all, it was his birthday, and he was trying to complete the aforementioned “Scottie Slam,” needing only to add the US Open to his 2 Masters wins, his PGA victory, and his Open championship. I get it. It would have been a great story. But rooting for your favorite player doesn’t mean being a jackass toward his competitor, and that’s what happened yesterday.

To say the reaction toward Clark was lukewarm would be an understatement. You would have thought we were watching the Ryder Cup, where disgusting fan behavior rears it’s ugly head every two years (just ask Rory McIlroy, who is loved on Tour, but has to listen to absolute verbal bile at the Ryder Cup when it’s on American soil). Clark had to listen to hecklers all afternoon, and it’s safe to say he felt the negative vibe from the New York crowd.

To his credit, Clark made crucial par saves and several huge birdies yesterday, never losing the lead, all in the face of a gallery that made it clear they wanted him to lose. In fact, Clark led the US Open from 7:09 PM Thursday until his tap-in on number 18 on Sunday. That’s the equivalent of a Steve Austin double middle finger to a crowd that deserved it.

In golf , we root for our favorites, but don’t root against the other guy. That’s the spirit of the game many of us grew up with. That spirit was sadly lacking yesterday.

RW

Random Thoughts On A Dog Day Afternoon

views from the booth header v2

Happy Sunday from The Booth!

In case you haven’t noticed, the days are getting just a bit shorter, and amidst the recent sweltering days, there have been a few fleeting hints of the coming Fall in the air. As we put another Valley League Baseball season in the books, head down the home stretch of the MLB regular season, and get ready for high school, college, and pro football, I have a few thoughts on this “dog day afternoon…”

I’ll start with the Olympic Games. I’ll confess that my self-imposed boycott of the Olympics was short-lived. After the disgraceful Opening Ceremony and the debacle of Women’s Boxing, I vowed not to watch a single minute of the games. But like a chocolate addict who says “maybe just one little piece,” I snuck a peek at the incredible Men’s 10,000-meter race, in which the USA’s Grant Fisher captured the bronze. It was only the second medal by an American in that event in 56 years, and the finish is worth watching again and again.

Once I had that little piece of chocolate, I had to have the entire Hershey bar, so I binged on the performances of Katie Ledecky (swimming) and Simone Biles (gymnastics), who will almost certainly go down in history as two of the best Olympic athletes of all time. And there was the golf. The USA’s Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number-one pro golfer, shot an incredible 62 today to capture the Gold medal. We can get cynical about the money that PGA Tour pros make, but Scottie’s emotional show of patriotism on the podium was real, and reminded us all why we watch the Olympic Games.

On to baseball, where it looks like the Nats aren’t going to give me the 81-81 season I was hoping for. But GM Mike Rizzo made many moves ahead of the trade deadline, and the Nationals now have a stocked farm system that should pay dividends in the coming years. James Wood is the real deal, and is worth the price of admission to Nationals Park. Rizzo has promised that “there’s now light at the end of the tunnel,” and after five seasons of the “rebuild,” we can only hope that’s true.

And, no one will remember the score and stats of Thursday’s storm-shortened Pro Football Hall Of Fame Game this past week between the Bears and the Texans. But it’s worth noting because of a couple of local/regional connections. Chicago’s starting QB was Martinsburg High and Shepherd University standout Tyson Bagent, now in his second year with the club. The last MHS alum to make an impact in the NFL was Fulton Walker back in the 80’s, so this is a cool thing for Bulldogs everywhere. Bagent was replaced Thursday by Brett Rypien, the nephew of former Redskins QB (and Super Bowl MVP) Mark Rypien. Seeing the name “Rypien” on an NFL jersey brought back a lot of great memories of that 1991 team.

So there you have it: random thoughts on a dog day afternoon. Hang in there, everyone. Fall will soon arrive, and with it, cooler temperatures and football being played for real. We’ll just have to count the sweat drops until then. Where is the AC in this doggone Booth?
