Belle Grove explores African American history
Belle Grove Plantation is open and free to the public today from 8 am to 4 pm for special programming on the history of African Americans on the site and around the Valley.
Belle Grove will welcome special guests from The Slave Dwelling Project which held other events earlier in the week at Blandy Farm, Burwell Morgan Mill, and St Thomas Chapel in Middletown.
Each hour will feature speakers or presentations on topics like the life of an enslaved cook and the complicated road to freedom.
Special guest Cheney McKnight of the hit YouTube channel “Not Your Momma’s History” will host a discussion about experiences of enslaved people throughout North America.
These talks will all be available on Zoom as well with a link to register found here.
Belle Grove celebrates opening day
Belle Grove Plantation’s Opening Day for the 2022 season is today.
From 10 am to 4 pm, admission is free to the grounds and museum.
This season will feature the new exhibit Unearthing Enslaved Lives at Belle Grove.
From 2015-2019 archaeologists excavated over 60,000 artifacts from the Enslaved Quarter Site.
This helped them learn how the over 270 enslaved people lived at the plantation and their effect on the history and economy of the Shenandoah Valley.
