Berkeley County Sheriff to resign effective Dec. 26

Berkeley County Sheriff Nathan Harmon is resigning as of December 26.

The resignation is part of a plea agreement regarding his actions following his daughter’s car accident earlier this year.

As a part of the agreement Harmon plead guilty to the misdemeanor offense of obstructing a law enforcement officer.

In return for his guilty plea three other misdemeanor charges were dropped.

The state also recommended that Harmon be fined $500.

Harmon was previously charged with obstructing the responding officer’s investigation of his daughter’s crash.

Additionally, the sheriff was charged with tampering with evidence and then lying to the investigating West Virginia State Trooper.

The Berkeley County Commission will begin taking applications to fill the position on December 27 with a deadline to apply at 4 p.m. January 10.
