Lonnie's Fun Fact for Tuesday June 2, 2020. Melbourne was discovered by Batman! Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria, Australia. It is located at the head of Port Phillip Bay, on the southeastern coast. The central city is home to about 136,000 people and is the core of an extensive metropolitan area, the world’s most southerly with a population of more than 1,000,000. Port Phillip Bay was discovered in 1802 by Europeans but Melbourne wasn't established as a settlement until 1835, when a pioneer settler and entrepreneur, John Batman, negotiated a treaty with the Aboriginal elders for the purchase of 500,000 acres at the head of Port Phillip Bay. The price was 40 blankets, 30 axes, 100 knives, 50 scissors, 30 mirrors, 200 handkerchiefs, 100 pounds of flour, and 6 shirts. Batman and his heirs were bound by the treaty to provide an annual “rent of tribute” of similar items. For a very brief time Melbourne was known as Batmania.
