A 12-year-old boy remains in critical but stable condition after a shooting inside a Spotsylvania County home on June 9th, according to the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the 100 block of Lee Street for a reported shooting.

They found the juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

The child was transported to a local hospital by Spotsylvania Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management personnel.

Investigators say the shooting occurred inside the residence while several juveniles were handling a firearm.

The weapon discharged, striking the 12-year-old victim.

Authorities reported that no adults were present in the home at the time of the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to investigate and is working with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to determine whether any charges will be filed.

Spotsylvania Sheriff renews plea for cold case

December 5th marked a painful anniversary for a Spotsylvania County family.

The Sheriff’s Office renews its plea for information in the decade-old disappearance of Katelin Michelle Akens.

It has been ten years since Akens, who was 19 at the time, was last seen on December 5, 2015.

She was staying in the Partlow area of Spotsylvania and was scheduled to fly home to Arizona from Reagan National Airport.

However, she never arrived at the airport and never checked in for her flight.

Two days after she was reported missing, a troubling discovery was made.

Katelin  Akens’ luggage was found discarded along River Road in Spotsylvania County.

Sheriff  Harris and his office are reminding the public that Katelin is more than a name in a file.

She is a daughter, a friend, and a young woman whose life was abruptly cut short.

Her family continues to wait for answers, and investigators remain committed to finding out what happened to her.

Authorities are once again urging anyone with any information, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, to come forward.

You can submit anonymous tips through p3tips.com or Spotsylvaniacrimesolvers.org.

The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office hopes that even the smallest lead could be the breakthrough needed to finally bring Katelin home and provide closure to her family.

Virginia State Police reported by email it is investigating a fatal hit and run crash that occurred on July 6, at 4:52 a.m. on Interstate 95 northbound at the 120-mile-marker in Spotsylvania County.

A 1997 Ford Club Wagon (11-passenger van) was travelling northbound on Interstate 95 in the right lane when it was sideswiped by a 2006 Nissan Sentra driving on the right shoulder.

Both vehicles then crossed all lanes of Interstate 95, and both struck the left guardrail.

The van then went over the guardrail and rolled in the median, ejecting two of the 12 passengers.

One of the ejected passengers died in the scene.

Of the13 people in the van (one driver and 12 passengers), two suffered serious injuries, and seven suffered minor injuries (including the van’s driver).

The driver of the Sentra, Peter  Diez of Fredericksburg, fled the scene; he was later arrested and charged with hit and run and drug possession.

The crash remains under investigation.
