Hernandez’ 2nd HR Walks-Off Cubs, Express Win VBL Title, Olympic Update

Yadiel Hernandez hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the 9th yesterday, giving the Washington Nationals a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs. Hernandez blast was his 2nd homer of the day, and capped off a 4-for-5 afternoon. The Nats, who took 2 of 3 from the Cubs this weekend, take on the Philadelphia Phillies tonight, starting at 6:40 on Sports radio 1450.

The Baltimore Orioles fell to the Detroit Tigers yesterday 6-2. The O’s travel to New York to play the Yankees tonight at 7:05.

The Strasburg Express captured their 3rd Valley Baseball League Championship over the weekend. The Express beat Waynesboro 4-0 Saturday to complete a 2-game sweep of the Generals and secure the Lineweaver Cup.

And, at the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, American Xander Schauffle captured a gold medal in men’s golf, while largely-unknown Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs won the 100 meter sprint, earning the unofficial title of “worlds fastest man.” The USA leads the overall medal count with 60.

Express Roll To Finals, Nats Split With Phillies, Olympic Update

In the Valley League Playoffs yesterday, the Strasburg Express moved on to the VBL Finals. The Express completed an 8-7 home win in Wednesday’s suspended game with Winchester, then beat the Royals 17-11 at Bridgeforth Field to complete the 2 game sweep. Strasburg will now take on the Waynesboro Generals for the Lineweaver Cup. Game 1 of that series is tonight in Strasburg.

The Washington Nationals split a doubleheader with Philadelphia yesterday. In what was Max Scherzer’s final game as a National, Washington beat the Phils 3-1. The USA Today is reporting that Scherzer, along with shortstop Trea Turner, has been dealt the the Dodgers in return for prospects ahead of the 4pm trade deadline. In the nightcap, Brad Miller’s grand slam in the 8th inning was the game-winner in an 11-8 Phillies win. The Nats host the Cubs tonight starting at 6:35 on Sports Radio 1450.

The Nationals also sent reliever Daniel Hudson to the Padres in return for pitching prospect Mason Thompson and minor league infielder Jordy Barley. And Kyle Schwarber was traded to the Red Sox.

And at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, gymnast Suni Lee won the gold in the all-around competition, continuing a streak of American women winning the all-around for the 5th consecutive Olympics. In swimming, US teammates Lilly King and Annie Lazor won silver and bronze respectively in the 200-meter breaststroke. The United States leads the overall medal count with 41.

Royals-Express Suspended, Nats-Phils PPD Due To COVID, Olympic Update

In the Valley League Baseball Playoffs last night, Gme 1 of the North Division Finals between the Winchester Royals and Strasburg Express was suspended in the top of the 8th inning with the Express leading 8-6. Game 1 will resume this afternoon at 3pm in Strasburg, then the teams will head to Winchester for Game 2 at 7:30.

In the South Division Finals, Staunton evened it’s series against Waynesboro with a 7-6 win. The deciding Game 3 will be tonight in Staunton.

The Washington Nationals contest with Philadelphia last night was postponed due to a COVID-19 ourbreak on the Nats’ squad. 12 people have tested positive, including 4 players and 8 staffers. test results this morning will determine whether the 2 teams can play a 12:05 doubleheader. Should that twinbill take place, you can hear the action on Sports Radio 1450.

The Baltimore Orioles nipped the Miami Marlins last night 8-7. The Birds will be in Detroit tonight to take on the Tigers at 7:10.

And, at the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, US swimmer Caleb Dressel took the gold in the men’s 100 meter freestyle, setting an Olympic record. Meanwhile, swimmer Bobby Finke captured the gold in the 800 meter freestyle, while the USA won the gold in women’s 3-on-3 basketball. The US leads the overall medal count with 37.
