VBL Playoffs, Nats Hold OnTo Beat Phils, Biles Bows Out

In the Valley Baseball League Playoffs last night, Strasburg eliminated New Market with a 13-7 win over the Rebels. The Express will now take on Winchester in the North Division Finals. Game 1 of that series is tonight in Strasburg. The winner of the North Division series will take on the winner of the South Division Finals between Waynesboro & Staunton.

The Washington Nationals ended their 5-game losing streak with a 6-4 win over Philadelphia last night. The Nats built a 6-1 lead on home runs by Josh Bell and Juan Soto, and the Nationals’ bullpen combined for no runs and 1 hit in 4 & 1/3 innings. Trea Turner left the contest early after testing positive for COVID-19. The two teams play again tonight starting at 6:35 on Sports Radio 1450.

The Miami Marlins shut down Baltimore last night 7-3. game 2 of that series is tonight at 7:05.

And, at the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, American Gymnast Simone Biles suddenly withdrew from the team competition yesterday, citing mental health reasons. Biles has also pulled out of the All-Around Competition. Meanwhile, USA swimmer Katie Ledecky picked up a gold in the 1500-meter freestyle. The US leads the overall medal count with 30.

VBL Scoreboard, Padres Walk Off Nats, O’s-Chisox Tonight

In the Valley Baseball League last night, Strasburg got past Front Royal 6-2, Woodstock blanked New Market 8-0, and Winchester at Purcellville was postponed.

Games tonight in the VBL include Winchester at Front Royal, Strasburg at Woodstock, and New Market at Purcellville. On Sunday, the Valley League All-Star Game will take place at JMU’s Veterans Memorial Park at 7:30, with activities starting at 3:30.

The Washington Nationals blew an 8-0 lead and lost to San Diego last night 9-8. The Padres completed their comeback by plating a run in the bottom of the 9th to drop the Nats to 42-44 on the season. Trea Turner led the Nationals with 3 hits and 3 RBI. The Nats head to San Francisco to start a weekend series leading into the MLB All-Star break. Air time tonight is 9:15 on Sports Radio 1450.

The Baltimore Orioles begin a weekend set against the Chicago White Sox tonight. First pitch is set for 7:05 from Camden Yards.

Ash Barty will take on Karolina Pliskova for the Wimbledon Women’s title tomorrow. The men’s semifinals are today.

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Atlanta Sunday for the Quaker State 400, and on the PGA Tour, Sebastian Munoz and Chesson Hadley are tied for the lead after Round One of the John Deere Classic.

VBL Results, Turner Hits For Cycle In Nats Win, O’s Sweep Astros

There were only 3 games in the Valley Baseball League last night. Woodstock silenced the Purcellville Cannons 11-2. C’Ville and staunton were also winners.

Tonight in the VBL, Strasburg heads to Purcellville, while Winchester entertains Woodstock.

Trea Turner hit for the cycle in a 15-6 Washington Nationals’ win over Tampa Bay. Juan Soto added 3 hits, while Josh Bell drove in 3 runs, as the Nats swept the 2-game series and closed to within 2 games of the NL East-leading New York Mets. The Nationals, winners of 14 of their last 17 games, start a weekend series against the LA Dodgers tonight. Air time is 6:35 on Sports Radio 1450.

The Baltimore Orioles got out of the blocks with 4 runs in the first inning, and beat the Houston Astros last night 5-2. With the win, the O’s swept the 3-game series against the AL West leaders. The Birds are off today.

And, at Wimbledon, top-seed Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and American woman Sloane Stephens all advanced. 41 year-old Venus Williams lost her second round match.

Nats’ Slide Continues, Caps Win Finale, Former WFT Draft Pick Dies

The Washigton Nationals have now lost 6 of their last 7 games, folowing a 6-2 loss to the Phillies last night. Former Nat Bryce Harper cracked a homer against his old team, as the Nationals dropped to 13-18 on the season. Trea Turner continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-4 night for Washington, who take on the Phils again tonight starting at 6:35 on Sports Radio 1450.

The Baltimore bullpen gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th and lost to the New York Mets 3-2. The loss spoiled another strong performance from Oriole pitcher John Means, who gave up no runs in 6 innings of work. The 2 teams play again today just after noon.

The Caps beat the Boston Bruins 2-1 last night in the regular season finale. Michael Raffl scored the game-winning goal with just 3 seconds left for the Capitals, who will face Boston in the first round of the NHL Playoffs starting Saturday. The puck drops at 7 on The River 95-3.

And, quarterback Colt Brennan has died. Brennan set records at the University of Hawaii and was a former draft pick of the then-Washington Redskins. After a promising pre-season in 2008, Brennan never took a regular-season snap in the NFL. He was just 37.

SU Baseball Pairing Set, Braves Stop Nats, Caps-Rangers Tonight

On the Shenandoah University sports scene, pairings have been announced for the 2021 ODAC Baseball Tournament. 4th seed SU will host 5th seed Hampden-Sydney in a best-of-three series starting Friday at 2. The first 2 games are scheduled for Friday, with a Game Three slated for Saturday if neccesary. The Hornets enter the ODAC Tourney at 26-8, while the Tigers are 17-12. The ODAC Baseball Tournament will conclude the weekend of May 21st, with the NCAA D-3 Baseball Tournament selections to be made on May 23rd.

Huascar Ynoa tossed seven innings of 1-run, 4-hit baseball, and hit a grand slam homer as the Atlanta Braves ended the Washington Nationals’ 4-game win streak with a 6-1 win last night in DC. Joe Ross gave up only 2 earned runs, but took his second loss of the season. Trea Turner went 2-for-3 for his 11th multi-hit game of the season for the Nats, who take on the Braves again tonight starting at 6:35 on Sports Radio 1450.

Seattle erased a 1-1 game with 4 runs in the 8th inning and beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2. the 2 teams play the getaway game today at 3:40.

And, the Washington Capitals skate against the New York Rangers tonight. The Caps are 2 points behind the Penguins in the NHL’s Eastern Division. Air time is 6:45 on The River 95-3.

Nats Settle For Split, Caps Fall To Bruins, Bowman Steals Win At Richmond

On the Shenandoah University scoreboard from yesterday, Softball split a twinbill with Ferrum. Men’s Golf finished 9th in the 13-team Hampden-Sydney Invitational. Number-2 Salisbury out-slugged 15th-ranked Baseball 19-10. Virginia Wesleyan defeated Women’s Tennis. And W&L downed Men’s Lacrosse. Today, Baseball hosts Salisbury again at Bridgeforth Field.

Arizona scored single runs in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings to beat the Washington Nationals yesterday 5-2. Trea Turner provide the only offense for the Nats with a pair of home runs, as Washington fell to 5-8 on the season. The Nationals host the St. Louis Cardinals tonight starting at 6:35 on Sports Radio 1450.

The Boston Bruins doubled up the Washington Capitals 6-3 yesterday. TJ Oshie had a pair of goals for the 29-13-4 Caps, who remain in first place in the NHL’s Eastern Division. The Capitals skate again on Thursday against the New York Islanders. Air time is 6:45 on the River 95-3.

Alex Bowman overcame a penalty and took advantage of a late caution to win the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond yesterday. Bowman, driving a Chevy Camaro for Hendrick Motorsports, outdistanced Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano to take the checkered flag.

And, 47 year-old Stewart Cink won the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage Classic yesterday at Harbour Town Golf Links. Cink shot a one-under par round to finish at 19-under, to finish 4 shots ahead of the field.
