Frederick County Fire and Rescue (FCFR) reports that smoke in the western end of the county near the West Virginia line is from a controlled burn.

There are no active fires in Frederick County at this time it is the smoke from Waites Run on the Shenandoah County West Virginia side which continues to burn.

The smoke is from a strategic firing operation is to help bring the fire to a more controllable manageable containment.

Strategic firing operations are conducted by either hand, helicopter, and sometimes even drone when conditions are too dangerous for firefighters.

The operations help limit the fire from spreading beyond control lines.

The U.S. Forest Service is in command of the remaining fires in the North Zone Complex which includes George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
