News Maker Mike Bocock on his Valley League Book

Mike Bocock has been in Valley League Baseball for over 30 years.

He and Bill Meade have written the fourth coming book Close to the Dirt: Mike Bocock’s Life and Journey Through the Dugouts and Diamonds of the Shenandoah Valley.

We spoke to Mike about the book in our latest news maker.

The good news is brought to you by The Town of Front Royal.

Mike has some great stories to tell one of which he relays in the interview.

He also tells us how we can get a copy of the book and some of the locations he will be doing some book signings.

Mike also tells us that some proceeds of the book will go toward baseball programs in the valley.

Valley League Baseball lose an iconic member

Valley League Baseball lost an iconic member yesterday morning Oct. 7.

The New Market Rebels social media page announced that their President and General Manager of the team, Bruce Alger past away early Thur..

A supporter of the Rebels since 1965 Alger lost his battle with cancer at the age of 68.

Alger was also a chamber of commerce member for New Market receiving the Chamber’s President award in 2002 and Outstanding Citizen Award in 2009 according to his bio on the team’s website.

Alger was also on the Valley League Baseball board of directors serving as their Executive Director for 7 years.

There will be a memorial service at Rebel Park in New Market on Mon. Oct. 11 at 11 a.m..

Hernandez’ 2nd HR Walks-Off Cubs, Express Win VBL Title, Olympic Update

Yadiel Hernandez hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the 9th yesterday, giving the Washington Nationals a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs. Hernandez blast was his 2nd homer of the day, and capped off a 4-for-5 afternoon. The Nats, who took 2 of 3 from the Cubs this weekend, take on the Philadelphia Phillies tonight, starting at 6:40 on Sports radio 1450.

The Baltimore Orioles fell to the Detroit Tigers yesterday 6-2. The O’s travel to New York to play the Yankees tonight at 7:05.

The Strasburg Express captured their 3rd Valley Baseball League Championship over the weekend. The Express beat Waynesboro 4-0 Saturday to complete a 2-game sweep of the Generals and secure the Lineweaver Cup.

And, at the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, American Xander Schauffle captured a gold medal in men’s golf, while largely-unknown Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs won the 100 meter sprint, earning the unofficial title of “worlds fastest man.” The USA leads the overall medal count with 60.

Express Roll To Finals, Nats Split With Phillies, Olympic Update

In the Valley League Playoffs yesterday, the Strasburg Express moved on to the VBL Finals. The Express completed an 8-7 home win in Wednesday’s suspended game with Winchester, then beat the Royals 17-11 at Bridgeforth Field to complete the 2 game sweep. Strasburg will now take on the Waynesboro Generals for the Lineweaver Cup. Game 1 of that series is tonight in Strasburg.

The Washington Nationals split a doubleheader with Philadelphia yesterday. In what was Max Scherzer’s final game as a National, Washington beat the Phils 3-1. The USA Today is reporting that Scherzer, along with shortstop Trea Turner, has been dealt the the Dodgers in return for prospects ahead of the 4pm trade deadline. In the nightcap, Brad Miller’s grand slam in the 8th inning was the game-winner in an 11-8 Phillies win. The Nats host the Cubs tonight starting at 6:35 on Sports Radio 1450.

The Nationals also sent reliever Daniel Hudson to the Padres in return for pitching prospect Mason Thompson and minor league infielder Jordy Barley. And Kyle Schwarber was traded to the Red Sox.

The Baltimore Orioles fell to Detroit last night 6-2. The two teams play tonight at 7:10 pm.

And at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, gymnast Suni Lee won the gold in the all-around competition, continuing a streak of American women winning the all-around for the 5th consecutive Olympics. In swimming, US teammates Lilly King and Annie Lazor won silver and bronze respectively in the 200-meter breaststroke. The United States leads the overall medal count with 41.

VBL Playoff Scoreboard, O’s Sweep Nats, Olympic Update

In the Valley Baseball League Playoffs yesterday, Strasburg doubled up New Market 10-5. The Express take a 1-0 lead in their opening round North Division series. Meanwhile, Winchester routed Woodstock 12-0 to gain a 1-0 advantage in their North Division series. In the South, Waynesboro eliminated Charlottesville, while Staunton swept Harrisonburg.

Tonight in VBL Playoff action, Winchester hosts Woodstock, while Strasburg travels to New Market. Waynesboro and Staunton begin their second-round South Division series.

The Baltimore Orioles walked off the Washington Nationals yesterday 5-4 to complete a 3-game weekend sweep of the Nats. The Birds scores 2 in the bottom of the 9th to send the Nationals to 45-53 on the season, 8 games behind the NL East-leading Mets. The Nats take on the Phillies tonight. Air time is 6:35 on Sports Radio 1450.

At the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, The USA upped it’s medal count to 14 by virtue of a strong showing in the swimming events. The Men won a gold in the 4×100 freestyle relay, while Katie Ledecky won a silver medal. Meanwhile, USA Basketball stumbled out of the gate with an upset loss to France. China leads the overall medal count with 15.

On the PGA Tour, Cameron Champ won the 3M Open by 2 shots over 3 players, including Louis Oosthuizen.
